Gawker's Christine O'Donnell sex smear marks a new low | Richard Adams

Christine O'Donnell wins sympathy from all quarters after salacious personal attack appears on Gawker gossip siteGiven her bizarre past remarks on witchcraft and masturbation, it's hard to imagine how Republican Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell could be transformed from a figure of fun into one deserving sympathy. Yet that's the remarkable feat the US gossip website Gawker managed to achieve yesterday. After publishing an gruesomely-detailed and salacious account of a years-old booze-fuelled encounter between O'Donnell and an anonymous source, it was Gawker that attracted a storm of criticism from all shades of political opinion in the US, and produced some unlikely defenders for O'Donnell. While the strait-laced mainstream US media largely refused to touch the story, elsewhere the debate focused on Gawker touching a new low in lascivious online journalism. New York magazine opined: "We've reached the nadir of Christine O'Donnell mockery."The article, written in the breathless prose of a porn magazine's readers' letters page, claimed that the author and O'Donnell had a drunken tryst on Halloween three years ago, revealing the author to be a sexist boor as well as giving too much information about O'Donnell even for the most phobic of her detractors. The National Organisation of Women ? no fan of O'Donnell's hard-edged Tea Party politics ? put out a statement condemning the "slut shaming" tactics used by Gawker and calling it "an affront to all women"."Today the tabloid website Gawker published an anonymous piece titled 'I Had A One-Night Stand With Christine O'Donnell' that takes the routine sexual degradation of women candidates to a disgusting new low. NOW repudiates Gawker's decision to run this piece. It operates as public sexual harassment. And like all sexual harassment, it targets not only O'Donnell, but all women contemplating stepping into the public sphere," said NOW's president Terry O'Neill."Let me be honest: I look forward to seeing Christine O'Donnell defeated at the polls, but this kind of sexist attack is an affront to all women."On Twitter and blogs across the political spectrum the reaction was equally condemnatory.Alex Pareene, who worked at Gawker until earlier this year, described the piece as "explicitly, weirdly misogynistic". Slate politics blogger David Weigel, a Delaware native who has long predicted O'Donnell's defeat in the election for the state's Senate seat, tweeted: "Hey Gawker, I hope a one-day SEO term victory is worth the sleaziest piece of shit story in memory" ? SEO standing for "search engine optimisation", meaning the article was designed to attract internet traffic.Gawker's editor Remy Stern defended the anonymous article as "a great story" that exposed O'Donnell as hypocritical, telling Yahoo's Michael Calderone: "It had nothing to do with her being a woman."Stern also admitted that Gawker had paid a figure in the "low four-figures" to the author, a man later tracked down and exposed by the Smoking Gun website as Dustin Dominiak, a 28-year-old who lived in Philadelphia and has now gone to ground. The Gawker payment included a series of photos of O'Donnell dressed in a ladybird costume for Halloween but with Dominiak's face cut out. Gawker is part of Nick Denton's blog empire, which includes Deadspin, the US sports blog which recently published allegations of NFL star Brett Favre sending photos of his penis to a woman, while its technology stablemate Gizmodo was accused of theft by Apple after it paid $5,000 for a prototype of the latest iPhone.Despite all the uproar, the question is whether Denton's organisation really cares? So long as the hits and page views keep coming, even trafficking in tales of Christine O'Donnell's personal grooming is justified ? especially as Gawker's readership trails well behind its bigger rivals such as TMZ and the website of People magazine in the US.Even O'Donnell's Democratic rival Chris Coons's campaign attacked the piece: "The Gawker item is despicable, cowardly and has absolutely no value at all to any Delaware voters. We denounce it with great vigor."As you might expect, the O'Donnell campaign also condemned the hit piece as "sexism and slander". But displaying its cloth ear for campaign tactics, the O'Donnell camp then went overboard in trying to pin some blame on their opponents in a Facebook update: "Classless Coons goons have proven yet again to have no sense of common decency or common sense with their desperate attacks to get another rubber stamp for the Obama-Pelosi-Reid agenda."(The Facebook post was written before the Coons camp issued its denunciation.)This isn't the first time Gawker has shown a prurient interest in O'Donnell's sex life. The site previously published a post entitled: "Meet the Men Who Have Sleepovers with Christine O'Donnell". But yesterday's effort was a post too far.Christine O'DonnellGawker MediaNick DentonRepublicansUS midterm elections 2010US press and publishingInternetWomenUS politicsDelawareUnited StatesRichard Adamsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Myspace, a good old ghost town | Adam Boult

As MySpace relaunches as Myspace, is there still a place in your heart for the networking sites you used to love? For my money, MySpace is the best social networking website there's been. At least, it was great for a couple of years, before pretty much all 49 of my (virtual) friends abandoned it, posting "gone to Facebook" notices on their pages and never looking back.Since then the site has been a virtual ghost town, kept ticking over by a few die-hards, the occasional former user saying "wow, people are still on MySpace?" and a lot of bands taking advantage of the free music streaming function (my own included ? shameless plug). But now the site is getting a long overdue redesign. It's made its S lowercase and is incorporating some new features intended to make the ageing social network a companion, rather than rival, to users' Facebook and Twitter presences. In a press release yesterday the company boasted that it has "completely rebuilt its website, with a new visual identity and product features that put content centre stage"."Myspace will focus on promoting curators," it says, "? a subset of its audience whose reputation and knowledge around particular entertainment topics and emerging cultural trends make them uniquely influential ? by supporting them with the resources, tools and a platform to expand their reach within the Myspace community."That all sounds very impressive, in a non-specific PR-speak sort of way, but can Myspace really be saved from obsolescence? Since Rupert Murdoch shelled out $580m for it in 2005, its popularity has been on a consistent downward trajectory, and this much trumpeted overhaul could be too little too late. Those of us who mourn the rise of Facebook over Myspace point to the latter's versatility ? with some limited HTML knowledge, it's possible to modify a Myspace page in countless ways, and even now the site has an admirable wildness and openness that Facebook's walled garden approach can't match. While Facebook is arguably more about making online connections with people you already know, with Myspace you had much more free rein to build relationships with complete strangers, based on nothing more than similar interests or a shared sense of humour.Of course, even in its heyday Myspace had a lot of problems ? spam, fake accounts, eccentric people, Tila Tequila, garish pages that took an age to load or simply crashed ? but its often amateur, mish-mash aesthetic was all part of the charm. Facebook seems painfully sanitised in comparison. But then, I suppose one must accept that it's natural and right that such networks should eventually die off due to lack of interest. One day users of Facebook and Twitter users will up sticks and head for the next big thing, and there will be a few luddites like me complaining about how much better things used to be when we were all tweeting and poking each other. The social web is getting ever more slick, and the edges get worn down along the way. Nowadays we may look back bemused at the silly old sites we used to think were the best, most exciting things ever to grace the internet ? Friends Reunited, Friendster, Faceparty, Geocities ? but each of them had their charms, and there'll always be a few of us nostalgic types, standing Canute-like on the shores of progress, maintaining a Myspace page as if it were still the good old days of 2006.MySpaceSocial networkingFacebookSocial mediaInternetAdam Boultguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Chinese Twitter user seized after supporting Liu Xiaobo

Police arrest woman after she tweets her intention to march with a banner praising jailed Nobel peace prize winnerChinese police seized a woman from her house in the middle of the night after she tweeted her intention to demonstrate with a banner congratulating jailed dissident Liu Xiaobo on winning the Nobel peace prize, a friend said today. The news comes amid a crackdown on Liu's friends and supporters that has raised questions about who will collect his award next month. His wife Liu Xia, who is under house arrest, has invited more than 140 dissidents, activists and celebrities to accept the prize because she fears she will be unable to go.Zhang Shijie, a blogger in Chongqing, tweeted that officers had taken Mou Yanxi at about 2.30am.Another Twitter user, @newsinchina, said Mou had returned home but police had kept her mobile phone and computer, adding: "Reminder for those who want to send her DM, emails or text messages ? be cautious."Mou's mobile phone was still switched off this evening. An officer at the police station she was reportedly taken to denied knowledge of the case.Mou, a freelance designer thought to be in her 20s, had tweeted: "If there is really an anti-Japanese demonstration in Chongqing, I will carry a banner saying 'Congratulations, Uncle Xiaobo!'?"Several hundred people demonstrated in the south-western city this afternoon. Although some protesters have used rallies sparked by a maritime dispute with Japan to air unrelated grievances, it is unclear whether Mou was serious. Zhang wrote that she seemed to have been detained because of her tweet, adding: "If such behaviour goes on, it will eventually happen to all of us."He later wrote that police today warned him not to attend the rally and to be careful what he said on Twitter.Dissidents and activists have celebrated Liu's award despite the clampdown. In an open letter posted online today, Liu Xia said her husband would want his friends "to attend this historic ceremony and to share the glory".She invited people including Ding Zilin, whose teenage son was killed in the crackdown on the Tiananmen Square student protests in 1989, film director Chen Kaige and racing driver and blogger Han Han. She said she believed cultural figures could help promote social change.Liu Xia's friend Yang Jianli, a democracy activist exiled in the US, told Associated Press the letter was authentic and that he was helping her.We can't forget that our real, real hero, Liu Xiaobo, is still languishing in prison, and his wife is under house arrest," he said.Yu Jie, a dissident writer and friend of Liu who is under house arrest, told the Guardian: "Under these circumstances, I don't think I will be able to go anywhere. I think for most of the people mentioned in the list, going to Norway is impossible."Fifteen Nobel peace laureates, including Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter and the Dalai Lama today asked world leaders to press China to release the 54-year-old and end Liu Xia's house arrest. The letter asks them to use next month's G20 summit in Seoul to raise the issue with China's president, Hu Jintao. In response, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told reporters Liu was "convicted by Chinese judicial authorities for breaking China's laws".He added: "We oppose any attempt to make an issue of this, and we oppose anyone infringing on China's judicial sovereignty in any way."Liu is serving 11 years for incitement to subvert state power after co-authoring Charter 08, a call for democratic reforms.China has accused the west of ideological warfare. One commentary on the People's Daily website today was headlined: "It is an unquestionable fact that Chinese people have freedom of expression and press."The article, which did not directly refer to Liu, cited China's billions of publications, huge internet population and widespread TV broadcasting but did not mention its censorship of all media. The author, Ren Wen, said people overlooked freedom of expression "because they want to contaminate China's international image, weaken or even abolish the leadership of the Communist party of China and change the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics."Liu XiaoboNobel peace prizeProtestTiananmen Square protests 1989ChinaTwitterInternetTania Braniganguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

BBC admits Mark Thomas filesharing show contained inaccuracies

Trust committee partly upholds Feargal Sharkey complaint but rejects claim that programme was 'biased and prejudicial'The BBC has admitted that parts of a controversial Culture Show report by comedian and political activist Mark Thomas on filesharing were inaccurate, but denied a complaint by UK Music chief executive Feargal Sharkey that it was "biased and prejudicial".Thomas's Culture Show report, which aired on the BBC2 show in February this year, examined the digital economy bill which was then going through parliament and its attempt to crack down on illegal downloading. The comedian, who opposed that part of the bill ? which has since become law ? said on the show that it enabled film and music industry bodies to cut off people's internet access on the "bare minimum of evidence".Sharkey, who spoke in favour of the bill on The Culture Show, said in his complaint to the BBC that Thomas's report was "not only grossly misleading and inaccurate, but also misinformed the audience in a bias [sic] and prejudicial manner, thereby contravening the BBC's editorial guidelines relating to accuracy and impartiality". His complaint was part upheld with regard to accuracy and not upheld with regard to impartiality.Sharkey, who had demanded an on-air retraction and apology, took his complaint to the BBC's highest arbiter, the BBC Trust's editorial standards committee, after his initial concerns were largely rejected by the corporation's management. The trust committee, in its ruling today, said Thomas's report was an "authored" piece and was "not to be taken as if it were a report by a BBC presenter or reporter".But it admitted it "might have been better for the introduction to have more clearly indicated that the report was authored".The ESC said the "section of the report on the likely effects of the new bill had given the audience an inaccurate description of how the process of disconnection would work", adding that in "attempting to paraphrase the legal complexities of the bill the report had not been sufficiently precise and had been inaccurate"."Use of the word 'criminalise' in the introduction to the report was inaccurate but that this aspect of the complaint had been satisfactorily dealt with by the programme at the earliest opportunity," the committee added. The report had also "not retained a respect for factual accuracy ... with regard to the implication given that the secretary of state had unfettered discretion to amend the law on copyright without parliamentary scrutiny".Critics of Thomas's report claimed he had given much more time to opponents of the bill ? 8 minutes and 20 seconds out of a total of 10 minutes, according to Sharkey ? than its supporters. But the BBC Trust committee ruled that the programme had not breached BBC guidelines on impartiality."While Mark Thomas had expressed strong personal opinions in his links to camera, this was permitted by the guidelines on authored programmes. All the main views, including those that contradicted Mark Thomas's, were reflected," the committee said."Bias on a controversial subject had been avoided and ... impartiality had been achieved in a way that was adequate and appropriate to the output," the ESC added.? To contact the MediaGuardian news desk email editor@mediaguardian.co.uk or phone 020 3353 3857. Kindle helps Amazon beat forecasts

Retailer says ebook reader is best-selling product on UK site since launch, but warns investment will hit next quarter's resultsThe Kindle is the best-selling product on Amazon.co.uk, the company announced last night, as it revealed better-than-expected quarterly results showing products up by 16% to $231m (147m) and revenues up 39% to $7.56bn.But lower forecasts for profits in the next quarter led its stock to fall in late trading, as it invests in new warehouses to deal with products."In the 12 weeks following the introduction of the new generation of Kindles, customers ordered more Kindle devices on Amazon.co.uk than any other product," the company said in a statement. Since the launch of the Amazon UK Kindle store at the start of August, the number of paid titles available has grown from 400,000 to 450,000 ? though it did not put any figures on the number of paid downloads, number of Kindles sold or revenue from their sales. However financial analysts at Caris & Co told Bloomberg that they estimate that the Kindle will generate $2.8bn in revenues this year, growing to $5.3bn in 2012. Sandeep Aggarwal, a San Francisco-based analyst for Caris, suggested in a note to investors that "Kindle device users will not only continue buying more ebooks but also subscriptions, accessories, hardware warranties, and eventually use Kindle's wireless and computing capabilities for other data and content", such as music and videos.Shares fell by up to 5.6% in late trading, because the forecast earnings for the next quarter fell short of analysts' estimates. Amazon is guiding that it will have sales of $12bn to $13.3bn, and operating income of $360 to $560m. Analysts had forecast significantly higher profits of about $620m.Amazon is investing in new warehouses as it deals with more large electronics items as well as clothes: it has built 10 so far this year and aims to finish three more by the end of 2010. It anticipates that these will be ready for operation at the same time that the US economic recovery is ready. The best-selling Kindle ebooks in the UK since the bookstore's launch have been Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, Tony Blair's A Journey and Rosamund Lupton's Sister.US sales represented 54% of the total, while cash flow grew 16% for the past 12 months, the company announced.Amazon.comKindleE-readersInternetE-commerceDigital mediaMedia businessCharles Arthurguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

'Innovative' online radio service to launch this year

Radioplayer will stream dozens of stations, including those provided by the BBC and commercial broadcastersA new service seeking to revolutionise the way we listen to online radio will launch in December, it has been announced.Radioplayer will stream dozens of stations, including those provided by the BBC and commercial broadcasters, from one site. The service, which has been dubbed "iPlayer for radio" was unveiled at the Radio festival in Salford yesterday. The service will initially feature 50 stations, with 200 set to sign up when it becomes fully operational in February next year, according to the BBC. Content will be searchable by station, programme and genre.Radioplayer UK managing director, Michael Hill, said: "This is a defining moment for UK radio."Lending his support to the project, BBC director of audio and music, Tim Davie, added: "It is a result of genuine collaboration across the music industry and is the sort of innovation we need to make digital radio a reality."Meanwhile, Radioplayer chairman, Andrew Harrison, said the innovation would "create significant opportunities for the commercial radio sector".Around 4.7 million people listen to radio online every month, but it has yet to take off in the way many industry figures had hoped.Radioplayer's website describes the service it will provide as a free and consistent way of streamlining the way we listen to radio. "Online listening is seen as complex, inconsistent and fragmented," the statement reads. "We've settled on a model that achieves simplicity, consistency and enables users to switch stations ? while leaving the streaming and serving of the player in the hands of each broadcaster."RadioRadio industryInternetDan Martinguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Somerset shed attracts musical talent from around the globe

'Songs from the shed' website sees back garden become bijou stopoff for touring musicians looking for exposureWatch our audio slideshowLater tonight he'll play one of Bristol's favourite music venues and tomorrow he'll headline a gig in Cardiff. But when the Guardian comes to see him, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, a singer-songwriter tipped for great things, is getting ready to perform in Jon Earl's shed, deep in the Somerset countryside. The concept couldn't be simpler. Singers and bands set up in the modest structure at the bottom of Earl's garden. They record a short session. Earl videos it and posts the results on his website and on YouTube. When he launched his Songs from the Shed project, Earl, whose "proper job" is running a photocopying business, thought only a few local bands would pop in. But his bijou venue has become a stop-off point for well-known groups and singers and his site has attracted tens of thousands of hits.Dave Rotheray, who sold millions of records as a member of the Beautiful South, the award-winning fiddle player Jackie Oates and the American folk rock group The Young Republic have all played here. There are rumours, which Earl will not confirm, that one of the biggest names in contemporary British pop might just be dropping in soon. The project began life in the local pub. "I was discussing what to do with the shed with three friends," said Earl. "We were thinking of making it as a base for a cheese and cider society. We'd meet every month and sample cheese and cider."Then came the idea of inviting a local musician to play. A couple of local groups turned up, Earl filmed them on a simple camera and posted the results online. After three sessions singers and bands from as far afield as the US and Australia contacted Earl and said they wanted to play the shed."I was astounded and it's taken over my life," said Earl, who has hosted 50 sessions in a year. "I think bands like the atmosphere and the idea of getting back to making music in a simple way."Bands arrive and if it's a nice day tend to hang around the garden a bit ? there are hammocks for them to lie in. For those on tour, it's a break from the grind. Then they play. It's mainly acoustic. The noisiest are at the back, the quietest at the front and away we go."Benjamin Francis Leftwich helps Earl carry a table out of the shed and starts to play in the space they have cleared. As he plays, Leftwich glances at Earl's huge dresser, a family heirloom, its shelves loaded with curiosities - coronation mugs, battered cameras, a scary old jack-on-the box, a spinning top.The singer performs three songs and declares himself pleased. He arrived in Somerset after a heavy night in Sheffield and the shed seems to sooth him."It's a nice atmosphere. I felt at home, comfortable and the acoustics are good. I loved the ornaments on the shelves. I'm very aware of my surroundings as I sing - I take in everything around me and try to use that to get a feeling."I understand why bands like to play here - it's in the middle of nowhere and not flash and glitzy, it's a good place."The success of the project leaves Earl facing a quandary. Does he try to turn it into a business, perhaps try to find a sponsor or team up with a record label? If he tries to make the shed more commercial, it could lose its mojo."Musicians tell me don't try to make money out of the industry - just enjoy it. Dave Rotheray paid me the best compliment. He said there was no artifice or industry here - just a guy who loves music in his garden shed."The session over, Earl goes into his house to check that the video looks ok. Leftwich packs his guitar away and heads for the train station and the bright lights of Bristol.Folk musicIndieInternetSteven Morrisguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Superfast broadband gets 530m pledge in spending review

North Yorkshire, Cumbria, Herefordshire and Highlands and Islands to benefit, with 300m redirected from BBC licence feeNorth Yorkshire, Cumbria, Herefordshire and the Highlands and islands will all benefit from a 530m investment in superfast broadband, pledged by the government in its comprehensive spending review. The money will be injected over the next four years, and include 300m redirected from the BBC licence fee.In North Yorkshire, the 'rural market testing project' will see superfast broadband running up to 50 times faster than conventional broadband by using fibre-optic cable, introduced in up to 27 market towns where broadband provision was previously considered economically unviable. Around 11,400 businesses and 220,000 people are expected to benefit. The project is being run by Broadband Delivery UK, a government organisation with the task of ensuring broadband access to the whole of the UK by 2012, and high-speed broadband to the majority of the country by 2017.Around 2m households should benefit from the scheme. The problem with getting high-speed broadband to remote parts of the country is that more distance has to be covered, replacing existing copper wires with optical fibre, to reach the same number of people as in a city. That makes the "final third" of the population uneconomic without subsidies or high prices.Of the decision, the chancellor George Osborne said: "It will help encourage the growth of our creative industries as a key part of the new economy we are seeking to build."David Cullen, chief executive of NYNet, the North Yorkshire network, said: "The geography and demographic makeup of North Yorkshire represents a typical 'final third' area and the project will provide a valuable testing ground that will assist the government in providing broadband access to the whole of the UK."BT has already said it will seek to roll out fibre optic services across Cornwall, helped by EU funding. The telecoms company also set up a "competition" to get rural areas to bid against each other to be first in the queue for fibre optic rollout. However that requires more than 1,000 votes for consideration ? which for many rural areas could be difficult to achieve. The government also revealed that it will hold spectrum auctions for next-generation mobile broadband in either 2011 or 2012. Those could be used for mobile broadband services, though it is not clear whether they would be best for "fixed" mobile users ? essentially, to homes and businesses using antennae ? or for users in transit.BroadbandInternetBBCBBC licence feeSpending review 2010Tax and spendingDigital mediaCharles Arthurguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Child online safety chief Jim Gamble to leave next month

One of the UK's most influential child online safety advocates, Jim Gamble, is to leave his role as chief executive next month, the Guardian has learnt - four months earlier than expected.Head of the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, Gamble has been a controversial and combative figure, admired by activists but a source of frustration for those in the online industry.Ceop has already begun advertising for his replacement, who will undertake the position on a two-year secondment. Gamble reportedly stood down in protest at the Government's decision to merge Ceop into a new National Crime Agency, rather than granting it 'non-departmental public body' status, which would have given it more autonomy.A review of Ceop by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary in 2008, obtained by  the Guardian, highlighted tensions between Ceop and particularly sectors of industry. "These tensions are openly acknowledged in the child protection community, whether it is by government departments, charities, academia or the industry itself. These tensions relate to issues of funding, report abuse button and conduct of the debate."Though it concluded that there was no disagreement about the general need for reporting facilities, it hints at concerns raised by industry stakeholders about the lack of proper negotiation and collaboration. "Industry representatives pointed out that they were not certain that the Ceop Centre appreciates the complexity of this environment... These differences of approach have been debated in the public arena which has contributed to a polarisation of positions between the Ceop Centre and some companies."Some in the industry have said they would welcome a chief with a more conciliatory approach after a very public spat with Facebook threatened to overshadow much more important priorities for child safety online.John Carr, internet adviser to the Children's Charities Coalition on Internet Safety (Chis) said social networking will remain a priority for online safety campaigners, though he said he is waiting to see the Government's full proposals for the new structure of Ceop to better understand how the changes will affect the community. "I'm waiting to see what the proposal is," he said. "But I do think that some of Jim's points about the special nature of Ceop, and how it will be difficult to preserve that in a closer, police arrangement, have some validity."Child protectionInternetDigital mediaJemima Kissguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
